    The Evolving Role of Ethics in the Workplace

    This interactive session, co-presented by an attorney and a Corporate Compliance Officer, is designed to identify and explain evolving ethics principles applicable in the workplace, the expanding framework in which those principles are embodied and enforced and the practical application of these principles in a robust corporate compliance program.  The session will cover the legal sources of ethical obligations, concepts protecting whistleblowers, personnel policies to consider that clarify an employer’s expectations regarding ethical conduct, the value of creating a “Speak Up” culture and applied practices in promoting stakeholder engagement, transparency and accountability in the workplace.  We will also engage in interactive exercises to better understand the nuances associated with ethical dilemmas and decision-making.

    The Founder of Extensio Law, Misti Mukherjee represents employers in a wide range of issues related to employment law. As a former chief human resources officer, General Counsel, and Executive Vice President, Misti’s 27 years of employment law experience integrates a practical, value-oriented approach.

    Misti actively partners with CEOs, CFOs, COOs, CAOs, human resources professionals and in-house lawyers to develop creative and strategic solutions to a variety of employment law and risk management issues. These include employment discrimination, performance management, reductions in force, ethics, FMLA/ADA and leave management, policies and procedures, crisis management and human resources legal compliance. Misti regularly negotiates and drafts employment-related agreements, including executive contracts, severance packages and non-competition and confidentiality covenants. Misti is also a skilled internal investigator and a dynamic and accomplished management and employee trainer.

Dedicated to the advancement of education, Misti has served as Trustee of The Madeira School and as an Advisory Board member of Marymount University Reston Campus. She has been a mentor, coach and Commencement speaker for students of Training Futures, a nationally-recognized workforce development program. Misti currently serves on the Advisory Board of the CARE (Companies as Responsive Employer) Awards.

    After graduating from the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin, Misti received her law degree from the University of Texas. She entered private practice in 1991.

    Shirley J. Knelly is the Chief Patient Safety Officer, and the Chief Compliance Officer at Anne Arundel Health System (AAHS).  In these roles, she has responsibility for all Quality and Patient Safety Initiatives, Regulatory Compliance, Corporate Compliance, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, Spiritual Care, Patient Advocacy, Patient Satisfaction, Risk Management, Policy/Procedure facilitation throughout the organization.


    Shirley received a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education from East Stroudsburg State College, East Stroudsburg PA, a Master’s of Science Degree in Counselor Education from the University of Scranton, Scranton, PA and a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Corporate Compliance from George Washington University, Washington D.C. She is licensed by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.  She is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).  She is a member of the Maryland Association for Healthcare Quality, Maryland Society of Healthcare Risk Managers, the National Association for Healthcare Quality, the Maryland Patient Safety Committee, and a member of MHA’s Quality and Finance Work Group.
